Your 5-Step Late Summer Lawn Recovery Plan for Central Ohio

Late August through early September is the best time for lawn recovery in Central Ohio. The summer heat has likely taken its toll. Brown patches, thinning turf, and stressed grass are common across Lewis Center, Dublin, Powell, and beyond. But with the right five steps, you can repair the damage before winter hits.

Step 1: Assess the Damage

Walk your property and note areas with: - Brown or dead patches - Thin, sparse grass coverage - Compacted soil (especially along walkways and play areas) - Weed invasion in bare spots

Understanding what you're dealing with helps you prioritize your recovery efforts.

Step 2: Core Aeration

This is the single most impactful thing you can do for your lawn in late summer. Core aeration removes small plugs of soil, breaking up compaction and allowing water, nutrients, and oxygen to reach your grass's root zone.

In Central Ohio, our clay-heavy soils become especially compacted over summer. Aeration is not optional. It's essential.

Step 3: Overseed with Quality Seed

Immediately after aeration, overseed your lawn with a quality tall fescue or Kentucky bluegrass blend appropriate for our region (Zone 6a). The aeration holes create the perfect seed-to-soil contact that new grass needs to germinate.

Pro tip: Don't skimp on seed quality. Bargain seed mixes often contain annual ryegrass that dies over winter, leaving you right back where you started.

Step 4: Fertilize Strategically

Apply a starter fertilizer with a higher phosphorus content to encourage root development in your new seedlings. This is different from your regular fall fertilizer. It's specifically formulated to support germination and establishment.

Wait 4-6 weeks after overseeding before applying your standard fall fertilization treatment.

Step 5: Water Consistently

New seed needs consistent moisture to germinate. Water lightly 2-3 times daily for the first 2-3 weeks, keeping the top inch of soil moist. Once grass reaches about 2 inches, transition to deeper, less frequent watering.
