Lawn Aeration
Core aeration plus premium overseeding, the single highest-impact service for Central Ohio's compacted clay soils.
Professional lawn aeration for Columbus, Ohio properties.
Columbus-area soils are heavy, clay-bound, and compact relentlessly under foot traffic, mowing weight, and weather cycles. That compaction starves grass roots of water, nutrients, and oxygen, which is why even a fertilized lawn can look thin and tired by August. Core aeration breaks through the compaction, and combined with premium overseeding it fills bare spots with new, dense growth.
- Breaks up thatch and improves soil structure in compacted clay
- Opens channels so water, nutrients, and fertilizer reach the roots
- Promotes deeper, healthier root growth heading into winter
- Overseeding option fills patchy and bare areas with Zone 6a blends
- Pulls thousands of 2-3 inch cores with commercial tow-behind aerators

What's included in your aeration visit
Aeration is more than running a machine across the lawn. Here's the complete service you get from our crew.
Pre-aeration walkthrough
We flag sprinkler heads, dog fences, drainage lines, and any sensitive areas before the equipment rolls.

Commercial core aeration
Tow-behind hollow-tine aerators pulling 2-3 inch plugs across the entire lawn, not surface-poking.
Double-pass on compacted zones
High-traffic areas (pet runs, kids' paths, gates) get a perpendicular second pass.
Premium seed selection
Tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass blends bred for Central Ohio's heat, cold, and clay.
Calibrated overseeding
Spread evenly with rotary spreaders at the correct seed rate for new lawns or repair.
Starter fertilizer (optional)
Phosphorus-forward starter feed drives root development on new seed.
Cleanup
Driveways, walks, and patios blown clean. Plugs left on the lawn, where they break down in 1 to 2 weeks.
Watering & aftercare guide
Detailed watering schedule left with you to maximize germination success.

What core aeration actually does to your soil
Our commercial-grade tow-behind aerators pull thousands of soil cores (about 2 to 3 inches deep, roughly the diameter of a pencil) and deposit them on the lawn surface. Those holes create direct channels for water, fertilizer, and oxygen to reach the root zone. The plugs themselves break down in 1 to 2 weeks, adding organic matter back to the soil and inoculating the surface with soil microbes. It looks a little 'dirty' for a week. A month later the difference is visible from the street.
Why overseeding belongs with aeration
Aeration creates the perfect seed-to-soil contact new grass needs to germinate. Drop seed on a normal lawn and most of it never reaches soil. It sits on the surface, dries out, and feeds the birds. Drop seed into freshly aerated holes and it falls right where roots can develop. We use premium tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass blends bred specifically for Central Ohio: heat-tolerant, disease-resistant, and naturally aggressive against weeds. Within 10 to 14 days new grass starts pushing through.

The aeration window for Columbus lawns
The ideal aeration and overseeding window in Central Ohio is late August through early October. Soil temperatures are still warm enough for fast germination, daytime air is cooling, and rainfall typically increases: perfect conditions for new turf. Spring aeration (April-May) is also effective for compaction relief, but spring overseeding usually conflicts with pre-emergent crabgrass control. We help you choose the right window for your goals.
Pet traffic, kids, and the case for double-passing
If you have a fenced yard with active dogs, a sled path between the house and the swing set, or a gate everyone uses to get to the pool, those zones get punished. Standard single-pass aeration helps, but high-traffic strips benefit from a perpendicular second pass that doubles the hole density. We flag those areas during the walkthrough and quote the extra pass when needed. It's the difference between fixing the lawn for a season and fixing it for a year.
Aftercare: what you do in the first three weeks matters
Germination success comes down to consistent surface moisture. New seed needs to stay damp, not waterlogged, for the first 2 to 3 weeks. We leave a detailed watering schedule: typically light irrigation 1 to 3 times daily for the first week, tapering to once a day, then back to normal schedules by week three. We also recommend skipping mowing for the first 2 to 3 weeks and avoiding broadleaf weed killers for 4 weeks while the new grass establishes.
Don't wait: the aeration window is short
Late August through early October is the prime window in Central Ohio. Bookings fill quickly through September, especially after the first round of fall storms reminds everyone how thin their lawns got over summer. Get on the schedule early.

- Pair with fall fertilization for compounding results
- Spring aeration is available but skips overseeding if doing pre-emergent
Two ways to book aeration
Every visit starts the same way: irrigation heads and shallow lines located and flagged, then full-lawn core aeration that breaks up thatch and improves soil structure. Overseeding adds a calibrated pass of premium Zone 6a seed while the holes are open and seed-to-soil contact is at its best.
Aeration only
Full-lawn core aeration that relieves compaction so water, nutrients, and fertilizer reach the root zone. The right call in spring, when overseeding conflicts with crabgrass pre-emergent.

Lawn Aeration, answered.
Real questions from real Central Ohio customers. If yours isn't here, you have three fast ways to reach us.
01How often should I aerate?
Annual aeration is right for most Central Ohio lawns. Heavy clay soils, sloped yards, and high-traffic properties may benefit from twice-yearly aeration.
02Will the plugs damage my lawn?
No, the plugs break down naturally within 1 to 2 weeks and add organic matter and soil microbes back to your turf. They look messy for a week, then disappear.
03When will I see results from overseeding?
New grass typically emerges within 10 to 14 days. Full establishment takes 6 to 8 weeks with proper watering. Density improvements continue through the following spring.
04Can I aerate and overseed in spring?
Yes, but spring overseeding conflicts with crabgrass pre-emergent. If pre-emergent matters to you, we recommend spring aeration only (no seed) and fall aeration + overseed.
05What seed do you use?
Premium tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass blends selected for Ohio Zone 6a: heat-tolerant, disease-resistant, and aggressive enough to outcompete weeds as they mature.
06Do you aerate lawns with irrigation systems?
Yes, we ask every customer whether they have an irrigation system before we schedule. Heads and shallow lines get located and flagged before the aerator makes its first pass, because hollow tines pull cores 2 to 3 inches deep, right at the depth of many heads and drip lines.
07Do I need to do anything before you arrive?
Mow the lawn 1 to 2 days before service, mark any private irrigation or dog fence lines we wouldn't see, and water lightly the day before if the ground is dry.
08How long does the service take?
Most residential aeration and overseed visits take 1 to 2 hours depending on lot size. We'll usually be done before you notice we arrived.
09Will it work on a lawn that's mostly weeds?
Aeration helps, but a lawn that's mostly weeds needs a renovation strategy: likely fertilization, weed control, aeration, and overseeding over a full season. We're happy to put a plan together.
