Service Scope

What's included in your edging & mulch service

Edging and mulch are separate line items on your quote. This is the full scope when you book both in one visit.

Headline inclusion

Hand-cut natural edges

Sharp vertical edges hand-cut along every landscape bed, the line that creates depth and holds mulch where it belongs.

Clippings hauled off site

Clippings hauled off site

Edge clippings and loosened sod cleaned up and hauled off site, never raked into the lawn.

Premium hardwood mulch

Triple-shredded hardwood mulch from regional suppliers. Clean, consistent, long-lasting.

Color choice

Natural brown, black-dyed, or red-dyed. Pick the look that matches your home's palette.

Even 2" install depth

Fresh mulch installed at a measured 2" depth, enough to suppress germinating weeds and hold moisture without smothering roots.

Plant collar clearance

Mulch kept off trunks and stems to prevent rot, pest pressure, and 'mulch volcanoes.'

Hard-surface cleanup

Drives, walks, patios, and turf cleared of stray mulch and debris before we roll out.

Pre-emergent option

Add pre-emergent in beds to dramatically extend the weed-free window after mulching.

Deep dive

Why hand-cut natural edges beat plastic edging

We use professional-grade hand bed edgers to cut clean, defined vertical borders between your lawn and landscape beds, every spring. Hand-cut natural edges read as more refined than plastic or metal edging, define depth between turf and bed, and prevent grass from creeping into your gardens. We re-cut existing edges and can establish new bed lines when expanding or renovating beds. The result is a deliberate, architectural line you can see from the street.

Why it matters

Mulch depth: why we install at 2 inches

Mulch installed too thin (under 1.5") doesn't suppress weeds or retain moisture. Mulch installed too thick (over 4") smothers plant roots and creates a hydrophobic crust that sheds water. We install fresh mulch at a 2-inch depth, deep enough to block light from germinating weed seeds and slow evaporation, shallow enough to let oxygen and rain through to the roots. We measure as we install rather than guessing, which is the difference between mulch that performs and mulch that just looks pretty for a week.

What good mulch actually does for your landscape
In the field

What good mulch actually does for your landscape

Beyond aesthetics, mulch does critical work. It retains soil moisture (reducing watering needs by up to 70% in summer), insulates plant roots from Central Ohio's freeze-thaw swings, suppresses weeds by blocking sunlight from germinating seeds, and gradually enriches your soil with organic matter as it breaks down. It's one of the highest-return services in landscape maintenance, with measurable benefit for what you pay.

§

Avoiding 'mulch volcanoes' around trees and shrubs

Heaping mulch up against tree trunks and shrub stems, the so-called 'mulch volcano,' is one of the most common landscape mistakes, and it's actively damaging. It traps moisture against bark, invites rodents and insects, and encourages girdling roots. We always pull mulch back a few inches from trunks and stems, leaving a small clearance ring. A few inches of clearance is all it takes.

Color, supplier, and what's in the bag

We install triple-shredded hardwood mulch from regional Ohio suppliers, in natural brown, black-dyed, and red-dyed options. Triple-shredded means consistent texture that locks together rather than blowing around. Regional sourcing means we know what's in it (no construction debris, no chemical residue). For commercial and HOA properties we can specify pine fines, cedar, or premium dyes when curb appeal warrants the upgrade.

Spring Priority

Mulch in April-May. Refresh in fall if needed.

Fresh mulch in April-May locks in soil moisture before summer heat sets in and suppresses spring weed germination. By June, beds without fresh mulch look tired and weed pressure is harder to fight. Get on the spring schedule before peak weeks fill.

Two Line Items

Edging and mulch are priced separately: book either or both

Each service carries its own price on your quote. Most properties book both in one spring visit, but you can refresh mulch on last year's edge or re-cut edges without new mulch.

01

Bed edging

Hand-cut vertical edges along every landscape bed, with all edge clippings cleaned up and hauled off site.

02

Fresh mulch install

Premium hardwood mulch installed at a 2" depth in the color you choose: natural brown, black-dyed, or red-dyed.

03Recommended add-on

Add pre-emergent

Applied under fresh mulch to extend the weed-free window by months, the best answer for beds with a weed history.

Frequently asked

Edging & Mulching, answered.

Real questions from real Central Ohio customers. If yours isn't here, you have three fast ways to reach us.

01

How often should mulch be refreshed?

A full refresh every spring (April-May) and an optional touch-up in fall. Most properties need new mulch annually because the previous year's mulch has broken down into the soil, which is good. That's how it works.

02

Do you remove old mulch first?

If existing mulch is thin (under 1.5") we top-dress to a finished 2" depth. If it's already piled too deep, we remove the excess before adding fresh. We won't bury your plants under 5" of mulch.

03

Which mulch color should I choose?

Brown is the classic look. Black adds modern contrast and pairs well with light siding. Red is bold and reads well against red brick. We're happy to advise based on your home's color palette.

04

Do you pull the weeds in my beds before mulching?

No. Weeds present in the beds at the time of install are not removed; that's stated plainly in our service agreement. Fresh mulch at 2" suppresses new germination but won't kill established weeds, so book a spring cleanup first, or pair beds with our plant bed weed control program (available with weekly mowing) for the cleanest result.

05

Will mulch attract bugs or rodents?

Properly installed mulch at a 2" depth, kept off trunks and stems, doesn't attract pests. Mulch volcanoes do. We always clear plant collars to prevent rot and pest harborage.

06

Do you do new bed creation or just refresh?

Both. We re-edge and refresh existing beds, and we can cut new bed lines for landscape renovations or expansions.

07

Can you add pre-emergent under the mulch?

Yes. Adding pre-emergent under fresh mulch is the single most effective way to extend the weed-free window. We strongly recommend it for spring installs.

08

Do you service my city?

We service Lewis Center, Dublin, Powell, Hilliard, Westerville, Delaware, Columbus, and most communities inside I-270. See our service areas page or call (614) 210-1194 to confirm.
