Protect Your Property with the Right Treatment: A Summer Lawn Guide

There's a persistent myth in Central Ohio lawn care: once July hits, a lush green lawn is simply out of reach until fall. It isn't true. Ohio summers are genuinely hard on cool-season turf - stretches of heat, humidity that breeds disease, and rainfall that swings between too much and none at all. But the lawns that stay green through August aren't lucky. They're managed differently. Here's the strategy we use to keep properties healthy through the hottest months of the year.

Mow High, Mow Sharp, Mow Often

Summer mowing mistakes do more damage than summer weather does. Three rules keep you out of trouble:

  • Raise the deck. Keep your grass at 3-4 inches through summer. Taller grass shades the soil, which keeps roots cooler, slows evaporation, and denies sunlight to weed seeds trying to germinate.
  • Keep blades sharp. A sharp blade slices cleanly; a dull blade tears. Torn grass tips turn brown and give fungal diseases an easy entry point - a serious risk in humid Ohio summers.
  • Mow weekly. Never remove more than a third of the blade in a single cut. Scalping a lawn in the heat of summer is one of the fastest ways to kill it.

Water Deeply, Not Daily

Daily light sprinklings feel productive, but they train roots to stay near the surface - exactly where they're most vulnerable in a heat wave. Your lawn needs about one inch of water per week, delivered in one or two deep soakings rather than seven shallow ones.

Timing matters as much as volume. Water early in the morning, finished by 7 a.m. if you can manage it. Early watering lets moisture soak into our clay soils before the sun burns it off, and it gives grass blades time to dry during the day. Evening watering leaves turf wet overnight, which is an open invitation to fungal disease.

Feed Your Lawn the Right Summer Diet

The right fertilizer blend changes with the calendar. Heavy nitrogen in the peak of summer pushes tender top growth exactly when your lawn can least support it, weakening the turf and raising disease pressure. Cool-season grasses in Zone 6 want their heaviest feeding in fall, not July.

That doesn't make summer a no-feed season - it means the blend and rate have to match conditions. We tailor summer applications to what the turf actually needs in the moment, supporting steady health without forcing growth the weather won't sustain.

Get Ahead of Grubs and Weeds

If irregular brown patches show up in mid-to-late summer and the dead turf pulls up like loose carpet, grubs are the likely culprit. These beetle larvae feed on grass roots just below the surface, and by the time the damage is visible, the feeding is well underway. Preventative grub treatment in early summer is far more effective - and far cheaper - than trying to rescue a lawn after the fact.

Weeds need a two-front approach. Pre-emergent applications stop crabgrass and other annual invaders before they germinate, while post-emergent treatments knock down the weeds that slip through. A thick, properly mowed lawn is your best long-term defense, but in a Central Ohio summer, targeted treatments keep the pressure off while your turf holds the line.

Use Summer to Plan for Fall

The best fall lawns are booked in summer. Two services deserve a spot on your calendar now:

  • Core aeration relieves the compaction that builds up in our clay-heavy soils over a season of mowing, foot traffic, and summer heat, opening the root zone back up to water, air, and nutrients.
  • Overseeding thickens thin and sparse areas and adds density across the whole stand - and early fall is the single best window of the year to do it in Central Ohio.

Early fall slots fill quickly, and timing matters for both services. Scheduling in summer means your lawn gets them in the ideal window instead of whenever a crew happens to be free.
